BART Pushes to Expand to South Fremont and Beyond

BART System Map Visualization

Bay Area Rapid Transit stations, commonly known as BART, offers convenient and expeditious public transportation to millions and millions of Bay Area natives and a good portion of these individuals rely on BART solely for commuting to and from work. With the increasing trend of rideshare and using public transportation as a primary source of getting around town, BART expects these numbers to increase over the next decade.

With the current expansion of BART to Warm Springs / South Fremont expected to be done in Fall 2015, BART will inevitably spend more on maintenance workers and electricians in order to maintain the transportation system as it extends into the South Bay. Companies similar to Civil Maps can use LiDAR survey data to create explorable and scalable 3D maps to help BART and other transportation companies with asset management.

A prime example of 3D mapping applied to public transportation is in the case of the University City Loop Trolley in Missouri. A GIS-planning services firm had shown success using LiDAR 3D maps to operate equipment remotely to avoid hazardous traffic, saving them both time and operational costs.
