Disaster Relief and Remote Mapping

[Disaster Mapping Visualization]

Fast mapping is becoming an integral part of disaster relief. For the recent earthquake in Nepal, companies like Tomnod crowdsourced the labeling of public satellite images.

Features identified by volunteers:

  • Damaged Road / Bridge
  • Damaged Building
  • Major Destruction
  • Tent / Shelter

When enough people label a satellite image, it can be used for humanitarian purposes, such as helping the Red Cross avoid damaged infrastructure when transporting relief supplies.

In the future, Civil Maps hopes to assist in fast map-making for disaster relief using surveying drones to generate real-time data for responders.
