Partnership with Civil Maps and Renovo: Building a Universal Operating System for Automated Mobility

Today’s autonomous vehicle and automated mobility market looks a lot like the early days of the personal computer industry: many players, each building its own proprietary machine: a highly automated vehicle (HAV). When a universal, hardware-agnostic computer operating system (OS) finally came along, it allowed specialized components – video cards, motherboards, modems, hard drives, and etc. – from a variety of manufacturers to work together through a common interface and software to be written once and run across all PCs using the OS. That operating system brought about the personal computer revolution. Civil Maps wants to create a similar transformation in the industry by teaming up with equally innovative companies who share our vision for the next phase in autonomous and automated vehicle development, which we think of as AV 2.0.

Today, Civil Maps officially announced that we’ve partnered with Renovo, developer of the AWare™ platform, the first OS built specifically for automated mobility. Much like a personal computer’s operating system allowed the PC to work with hardware from a variety of suppliers and software from a wide range of developers, Renovo’s abstraction layers give automated driving system hardware and software developers a universal interface that lets each manufacturer design a single component that can work in many HAVs, as opposed to a custom part for each make and model of vehicle. Unlike a famous OS vendor from the PC era that also developed productivity suites and a web browser, Renovo isn’t trying to build the core applications of automated mobility which include the automated driving system and mapping systems. Partnering with Renovo accelerates the critical effort to standardize protocols between automated driving system providers and HAV makers. Orchestrating this level of interoperability will bring HAVs closer to mass production and scale deployment by giving vehicle makers and fleet operators greater diversity and flexibility in their supply chains.

Platform for Interoperability To Benefit All

Recognizing the global need for more interoperable, modular, scalable and open vehicle software, Renovo is building the technology platform that merges a partner ecosystem of leading software, data analytics, and automotive-grade safety systems into a unified and brand-neutral operating system. It is really quite brilliant and we are thrilled to be working with them, as the company is tapping into something that our industry really needs: management of data between the various modules. With our joint effort, AWare-powered fleet deployments will be able to effortlessly integrate Civil Maps’ voxel-based fingerprint localization in six degrees of freedom (6DoF) using our proprietary sensor fusion. Together, we can also expand our customers’ operational areas via our lightweight Fingerprint Base Map™, allowing for near real-time updates over existing cellular networks (3G & 4G).

AWare’s Rapidly Growing Ecosystem

Our team is excited to join a consortium of innovative companies, including Samsung, Verizon, Metamoto, Velodyne LiDAR, and many others who are currently working with Renovo to develop and deploy safe HAVs at greater scale by fostering innovation, collaboration, and interoperability among the companies that provide the necessary hardware, software and services.

And since Renovo is expanding its own AWare-powered fleet of highly automated vehicles operating in San Jose, CA, Civil Maps will be working with them on an even larger scale. Over the coming months, we will mature the abstraction and integration standards with the intent of bringing our platform to Renovo’s customers by Q4 2018.
